Data backup in Microsoft 365

La sauvegarde de données dans Microsoft 365

81% of technology leaders have experienced data loss in Office 365. Indeed, one of the biggest advantages of Microsoft 365 is its cloud service which allows access to all your data anywhere. Conversely, like its competitors Google and Amazon, the disadvantage is that it does not back up data. This point can lead to a risk of data loss if it is not taken into account. Let’s see together why and how to fill this to make Microsoft your best ally.

How Microsoft 365 backups work

It is important to dissociate the notions of storage and backup. Storage allows you to save and store your data. Backup is the action of making a preventive copy of data on an independent medium.

A general belief suggests that when we subscribe to the Microsoft 365 cloud service, the backup of our data is an included service. However, it is not. Microsoft 365 is an efficient way to store your data, but it’s not backed up by Microsoft and therefore not adequately protected. Here is an excerpt from the Microsoft 365 Services Agreement that reflects this:

“We are working to ensure the continued availability of services. However, all online services suffer from occasional disruptions and outages, and Microsoft is not responsible for any disruptions or losses caused. In the event of a failure, you may not be able to recover your content or the data you have stored. We recommend that you make regular backups of the content and data you store on the Services or using Third-Party Applications and Services. »

As on a computer, Microsoft 365 offers the possibility of recovering accidentally deleted data from the recycle bin, which does not offer sufficient protection in the event of a major computer problem causing a loss of your data. It is therefore essential to support your Microsoft 365 environment with a complete backup and restoration system for your data.

Indeed, in the event of account deletion, disruptions, breakdowns, or even security threats, Microsoft 365 cannot be held responsible for the loss of your data.

This mode of operation is called a shared responsibility mode. Microsoft’s share of responsibility extends to the proper functioning and security of M365 services. From your side, you are in charge of the protection of your data and your connected devices.

Why use an external backup system

“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” is an expression that could illustrate the right strategy to adopt vis-à-vis your cloud provider.

In order to complete the data coverage of Microsoft 365, it is your responsibility to adhere to a backup solution in order to protect your data from any possible loss. In addition, with a backup system for your Microsoft 365 space, you can benefit from rapid restoration of your data and files in the event of loss.

MS Solutions advice: In order to choose your backup solution, make sure that it registers and follows the standards and compliance requirements of Microsoft 365.
