Must-have gadgets for working at home

When telecommuting, we tend to take fewer breaks and sit too long. In addition, most workers do not have the equipment to work as efficiently from home as they do in the office. It is for these reasons that back pain has increased significantly since the pandemic began. So here are 5 must-have gadgets according to MS Solutions to create a more ergonomic work environment at home.

1-A computer stand

Use a laptop stand whose height and inclination can be adjusted to improve your posture at work. This is an essential ergonomic gadget to have for telecommuting.

This one allows you to raise your computer screen to the level of your eyes. This support can save you a lot of back and neck pain and ensure a more comfortable position when you work. Without a stand, your neck is constantly in a downward position, which creates tension in your neck, but also in your back and shoulders.

Choose a computer mount that is rigid and lightweight for easy transport, and that will last for years because it will be durable. There are even ergonomic stands for tablets.

2-A secondary keyboard and mouse

When your laptop is placed on your stand, the screen will be positioned at your eye level, but this makes the keyboard and touchpad not as easily accessible. Having a keyboard and a secondary mouse allows you to keep a good posture by having the necessary tools closer to you.

Here are some tips on how to choose the right mouse for you.

Choose a mouse that :

  • Favors a natural posture of your hand, so it’s not too big or too small;
  • Will not twist your wrist;
  • Has buttons that are not too far apart or too far from your finger position;
  • Has a shape that ensures that your palm is well positioned on the mouse.

The goal is for your hand to rest naturally on the mouse you choose.

3-A good Internet/Router connection

The basis of telecommuting is to have a good Internet connection to avoid connectivity and speed problems that could disrupt your work sessions. So you need a good service and a reliable router.

Here are some tips to improve your connection:

  • Disconnect devices you don’t use;
  • Your Internet package is performing well, but your router is old? It is important to have a router that is also performing well. Check with your Internet provider, routers that are outdated can often be replaced at no cost;
  • Place your router in an ideal location that is not too far from your work location and avoid concrete walls or glass between the router and your telecommuting location.

4-A good chair

Ideally, you should choose an office chair that is adjustable, that allows you to change your position and to have your feet flat on the floor. The armrests of your chair should also be adjusted so that your elbows are at keyboard height. A good indicator of whether your chair is properly adjusted for you is if your knees and elbows are at a 90 degree angle when working.

5-A good office light

The lighting in your workplace can affect your concentration, your health, your mood and even your motivation. In addition, poor lighting makes your eyes more tired and can cause headaches.

So make sure you have a desk light with an articulating arm for better directional lighting, especially on gray days, as well as a ceiling light to create an even light in your room. Also, place yourself in an area with as much natural light as possible.

Finally, if the budget allows, an adjustable height desk is definitely a tool to vary positions during long work hours.

In Short

Be comfortable and avoid injury with these telecommuting gadgets and remember to take short breaks to take time to move your body. In addition to the hardware, it is essential to think about the software aspect. MS Solutions can help guide you in equipping yourself for hybrid work!
